Austin, Texas is starting a revolution in the book publishing world.

Two new companies have formed in Austin, Texas with the intent of changing the way that new authors approach publishing. Reader Views (http://www.ReaderViews.com), founded and led by Irene Watson, provides independent book review services to authors and publishers. Back of the Room (http://www.BackOfTheRoom.com), co-founded by Steven List and Celeste Stokely, is an online bookstore that only sells self-published and small press works.

These two companies recently came together to create greater benefit for their mutual community by arranging for Reader Views to review all products listed on Back of the Room.

“It just seemed the natural thing to do, in providing greater value to the authors and small publishers who list their products with us,” said List. List, with co-founder Stokely, started the business with a focus on professional speakers, many of whom self-publish, and many of whom have developed exceptional products that only reach audiences who are present for a speaking engagement. “We are committed to helping these products reach a wider market, because we believe in the quality and value they bring.” The business rapidly expanded out of the speaker market to include a broader market.

That expansion accounts for the connection between Back of the Room and Reader Views. List and Stokely, while exhibiting at the annual Association for Writers and Writing Programs Bookfair, met an Austin-based small publisher. She introduced List to Watson. “That’s the nature of this community,” says List “working in cooperation as much as competition, all committed to the authors.”

Watson, herself a published author, founded Reader Views in response to the challenges she met in obtaining quality independent book reviews. “Having well-written, independent reviews can be a critical element in the marketing and success of any book. If you’re working with a larger publisher, they will arrange for reviews. But if you are self-published or working with a smaller publisher, it’s much harder.”

Watson, having started Reader Views in late 2005 in Austin, had set a goal to find a larger number of books to review. Back of the Room, also having started in late 2005, had set a goal to obtain quality independent reviews for all products listed on Back of the Room. Serendipity brought them together at a time when they each provided what the other was looking for.

“The reviews delivered by Reader Views’ reviewers are well written, objective, and honest,” says List. “This was exactly what we were looking for. The fact that Irene and Reader Views are based in Austin meant that we could meet, talk about our independent and mutual goals, and quickly reach an agreement.”

“Just when I was looking to reach out, get more products to review, and expand our reach, Steven called me out of the blue. It was what I was looking for all in one place,” says Watson.

For a relationship that began just weeks ago, it is already beginning to bear fruit. Reviews from Reader Views are beginning to appear on Back of the Room. Credit for all reviews on Back of the Room is given to both Reader Views and the individual reviewers. Since no money changes hands, there is no question about the reviews being independent and honest. This gives the authors and publishers additional resources in their quest to increase visibility and sales.

Because of the way in which goods are sourced, it is often the middle man or the company bringing in the goods which make the most money out of a product. Little goes to the artisans who produce the goods but because they have no voice, they are often side tracked in the ensuing melee.

Many large companies famous in the malls and high streets around the world have woken up to the fact that people are now more socially aware and have started to ask questions about where the goods come from.

Indeed, some stores have been boycotted when the public found that their goods were made in sweat shops with children as young as five having to put in a long day just to get a few cents.

Because of this, fair trade companies have sprung up and will only bring is goods where the artisans get a decent living wage depending on which country they live in. One such company brings in sandals made from recycled tires which are made in East Africa. The soles are literally the treaded tires with the tops being decorative bead work or leather straps made by people from that country also.

Because of this kind of trade, women have been able to put their children in school, where they belong, instead of having to carry the kids with them and everyone having a hand in stringing beads etc so that the family can have a meal at the end of the day.

We, the public, feel better that the profit is being shared on a more equitable basis and we can also be assured that the materials used are recycled. A sort of double whammy for the buyer!

Look out for internet sites which sell all kinds of fair trade goods since they will certainly not stock anything which does not come from sustainable sources. Even the leather used to make sandals or bind books are the secondary resource after the animal has been killed for meat. Since the herds are grown specifically for meat and killed humanely, at least this goes some way to righting the balance for over indulgent westerners.

Of course, nothing will ever replace fair pay for the worker who toils all day at whatever craft he is good at. But at least by going the fair trade route, customers are assured to some degree that these workers will be treated with some dignity. Think of this the next time that a new handbag is in the offing!

Sometimes big ideas start small and grow up. A loosely knit group of cooperating authors came together in 2003 at a bookfair; they found their cross-promotional effort worked better than previous endeavors but still left much to be desired.

Since then one of those authors, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, put this learning experience and hundreds more promoting her own books into a nitty-gritty how-to book for authors called The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won’t. When she found her readers wanted more direction, she published an e-zine that keeps them up-to-date on new promotion ideas and book news. That grew into Authors’ Coalition where writers and publishers come together to learn in an ever-changing and puzzling industry.

Now a formal entity with a website of its own, Authors’ Coalition (http://authorscoaltionandredeneginepress.com), plans to introduce themselves–formally– to writers in Southern California at the LA Times Festival of Books in April of 2006, Booth #610.

The group’s booth — itself a model for authors — will include more than 30 authors. Unlike most booth concepts, this one showcases authors using value-added efforts to make it a success. These include a catalog of the featured books for booksellers, and a promotional CD that will be given to booth visitors and the media. The booth also limits the number of featured authors so that each can be highlighted.

Authors’ Coalition also serves as a web-presence for its members with ad space and reviews for participating authors. The organizations educate with a blog (http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson), offers short-run support materials that can be tailored to a specific event, free writing-related e-books and more.

Authors’ Coalition founder, Howard-Johnson, is an award-winning literary author and poet and her how-to book won USA Book News’ “Best Professional Book 2004″ and the Book Publicists of Southern California’s Irwin Award (http://www.bookpublicists.org/pages/IRWIN_winners.asp ). The Annual ABAA Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair is one of the oldest and most respected antiquarian book shows in the country. This video came from the 2011 fair. But this also presents consumers with a seemingly insoluble dilemma when were also being exhorted to buy local to reduce our carbon footprint and do our bit to combat climate change, global warming and the like.

Heres the DFID again With British shoppers spending over 1 million every day on African fruit and vegetables, and supplies of organic African produce growing, a ban {on imported foods} could result in the loss of a valuable market and affect many small farmers.

Recent estimates suggest that almost a million rural African livelihoods depend at least partly on the fruit and vegetable trade with the UK.

According to the Co-op Group, we must “ensure that the world’s poorest producers are not penalised for what are essentially the sins of world’s richest consumers.”

In Kenya, for example, carbon emissions are 200 kg a head, while in the UK they are almost 50 times that.

Its a sentiment echoed by companies in the forefront of the research and development of agricultural products, such as low-chem biopesticides, biofungicides and fertilisers, including Marcus Meadows-Smith, CEO of AgraQuest, a leading US-based company specialising in this area.

He, too, believes it is not right for farmers to have to compromise on yield and that sustainable farming using this new generation of safer, more natural agro products, may eventually provide part of the answer to the dilemma, particularly in the developing world, since it will help protect their land, maximise its yield and help producers to sell their products in the global marketplace.

Hopefully eventually none of us will have to wrestle with our consciences between Fair Trade and reducing our carbon footprint nor sacrifice our melons and bananas.

Escape from Hat is an illustrated childrens novel about a young boy who loses his lucky rabbit. In New York, she studied voice with Paola Novikova, teacher of international singers. Studies and some teaching in sculpture, ceramics, design, drama, dance, and a Columbia University M.A. gave her a broad feeling for the psychology of performance and creativity. Doolittle and his wife Misook, of the renowned fashion firm, Exclusively Misook, have been married thirty-two years and reside in Scarsdale, New York. This is Doolittles first book.
